Blood Ties - Session 03

Characters introduced:
-Josué Carrera: leader of the Familia gang, girlfriend was murdered
-Benny: Rudy’s brother, co-owner of Brother’s pawn

Daniela spoke with Dr. Mason.  He said that he would contact the Diocese to attain permission to speak with Father Soto, of Santa Teresa de Ávila, for Daniela.  He said he would call her back before lunch with the results of the request.

Violet invited Daniela over to Lucy’s place to discuss the events of last night.  Lucy’s name badge from work was found.  The badge indicated that she worked at Norwegian American Hospital on the 7th floor.

Rudy texted Violet.  He urged Violet and Daniela to come over to his pawn shop to talk with him about last night and about Lucy.  According to Rudy, Esme has been trying to keep him and Lucy from seeing each other.  Rudy also shared that Esme lives in Old Town now and doesn’t understand the Barrio anymore.

Rudy also shared that he was part of Familia.  To keep the gang satisfied Benny and Rudy need to give a large cut of their profit from the pawn shop to Familia.  Rudy laments his recruitment into the gang, at the same time he accepts the inevitability of the decision.

Rudy thinks that Familia is being torn apart from the inside in an attempt to wrestle power from Josué, their leader.  Rudy does not like Josué.  Rudy believes that he was followed home last night by someone from the gang, or perhaps the murderer.

When Violet mentioned Francisco Rudy was shocked to hear his name.  According to Rudy, Francisco was transferred to Utah sometime during his sentence and hasn’t been heard from in the Barrio for a number of years.  Rudy doubts that Francisco has anything to do with Lucy’s disappearance.

Beth texted Daniela to tell her that there was a headline in the local section of the paper about her trip to Logan Square.  The headline read: Vatican Investigates Stigmata in Logan Square.

Next session will begin again at Brother’s Pawn.

  1. I hope that this session held some intrigue for you guys. I want to get you two into some more action next session.

Try to think of what you want to accomplish next session. I like the idea of talking with some locals or perhaps visiting the hospital. Remember Dr. Mason will be calling back around noon and you can pretty much guess the decision rendered by the local diocese (you will need to find another way to get through to Father Soto).

You will have free reign for a while before the next conflict sweeps you up.

  2. Remember: every time you return to Lucy's Apartment you have a chance of searching around and learning something new.

  3. I took one of my tests this afternoon and I am using the blog to decompress. I have decided to dissect Bozena’s character (mostly because she posted her character sheet on a previous post, and therefore I have access to it). Hopefully this helps the both of you understand skills better. Before you take an action in the game think to yourself: Do I have a skill that will boost my roll? If not, is there another way of getting the desired result that does take advantage of one of my skills? Remember also that no progress will ever be made in the game without rolling. Your primary goal in a session is to roll your dice as much as possible. Rolls result in action or information, both of which forward the plot. Below are some ways to use your skills, this is not exhaustive; you will doubtless find many other uses.

    Skills:
    • Detecting lies – when talking to characters you may not trust you can roll to see if they are giving you false information or hiding something. Before trusting someone you should use this skill.
    • Deductive reasoning – if you are presented with information in the course of the game that doesn’t make sense to you this skill can be used to have the GM shed additional light on things; alternately this skill allows you to guess at where someone might be based on what you know about them (for instance locating a character who isn’t answering their phone or has gone missing).
    • Research – when reading books, searching the web (on a smartphone even), or sifting through old newspapers clippings this skill allows you to yield more useful knowledge; this skill can be used to find an address, decipher text, or learn about a field of knowledge your character doesn’t already know.
    • Observant – this skill keeps you from being caught off guard as well as noticing scraps of paper tucked away in the back of long forgotten drawers; you could also use this to notice strange behavior from another character (if you have already detected a lie, or find them suspicious) or to notice an identifying feature of a person such as a pin someone they are wearing.
    • Others naturally trust me – this skill can be used get assistance from character who might not otherwise have helped you; this skill can also be used to force a friendly character to go along with something they are afraid of or opposed to; famous last words: “come on, you trust me right?”
    • Psychology – detect instability in a character, similar to detect lie but this allows you to gauge mental stability; this could also be used to bluff someone into believing you by sounding all scientific: “he suffers from a dissociative identity, don’t listen to him.” Otherwise this skill can be used to force the GM to shed more light on topics related to this field of knowledge.
    • Religious traditions – this is another knowledge skill (like Psychology); this could be used to force the GM to shed more light on topics related to this field of knowledge.

One thing I notice that is missing from this skill set is a “fight or flight” skill. Since a nun doesn’t have much of a shot at being the aggressor, it would be wise to choose something like NIMBLE, SPRINT or PEPPER SPRAY. If you have an exit strategy you are more inclined to put yourself in dangerous situations. Since you have the Aspect “Curiosity” a flight skill will help you feed your curiosity with much less chance of the situation getting too dangerous. The more you use your aspects the better realized your character will be, and the more Fate Points you will score.

Speaking of pepper spray, any character can use it even if they don’t have it as a skill (you just don’t get a bonus to your roll). Since Rudy has warned you that the Barrio is under attack it would be wise to arm yourself. Alternately you could acquire the skill PIERCING SHRIEK and destroy the eardrums of your assailants and wake half the neighborhood in the process! These are the skills that make gaming awesome!
