01 Session - The Oni

We began with the kids; Melo (Adam), Del-Yin (Bauer), Piko (Brian), and Ichi (GM), playing in a field near the forest. Piko had just thrown a potion which spawned a large lizard which started to make its way threw the field toward the town. Ichi picked up a stick and the game began as the stick became a spear and she was on her way to fight the dragon to save her town. Melo quickly followed and with the help of Del-Yin stopped Ichi and pulled everyone out of the game and the lizard disappeared. Piko stomped off because they ruined the fun.

Piko ran into the woods looking for more ingredients for his potions, as Melo and Del-Yin found large sticks to play kind of the mountain. Melo delivered quite a beating to Del-Yin in a fun playful brotherly fashion, and left visible but not serious damage Del-Yin.

Ichi returned with a message that the boys needed to return home. Piko came out of the woods with some leaves which he claimed would help heal the wounds.

Melo and Del-yin returned home for dinner where their they were given a talking to about beating each other up so badly. After dinner Father explaned to Melo that one day he will take over his position of head of the town. A job that has been passed down in his family for years. There is a cellar in the house that contains scrolls of knowledge and wisdom that will assist Melo when it is time for him to take his place.

It was explained that Father and the boys will be going to the Azuma clan to the East to give them some aide for the rough season ahead, and that they are giving this assistance to them because in the past the Azuma have helped their clan during hard times in the past.

Some messengers arrived with a message from Uesuto of the Nishi Clan. This was the first time the boys have had the chance learn how to properly meet messengers to the town. The messengers came with a message demanding all clans unite under the rule of Uesuto. They also said that the Oni will be returning and if everyone did not unite then all will be lost for all on the island. After the messangers left Father sent Ichi's father out with some hunters to survey the land to see if there were anyone waiting to attack the village after such a strange message.

The boys met up with Piko and Ichi again and came up with a plan to brake into the cellar which contained the scrolls. Del-yin and Melo found a sword in the cellar and while fighting over it knocked over a candle and caught a scroll on fire. Their mother found them in the cellar and locked them in until father was home from preparing for the trip to the Azuma. Ichi and Piko ran off pretending that the explosion killed them and Piko was a zombie.

Good times.

  1. **Janz, I was going to create a blank post just to get the comments going, but I found your draft. I posted what you had, and left it 'to be continued' so you can fill it in when you can.**

Great first session. I am enjoying playing as 10 year olds. It allows us to not take anything too seriously yet. I think the dynamic between the brothers is very strong. I also like Ichi, I hope we see her as an adult.

I think that this backstory play is going to be great because when we are adults we can all reflect back on our collective past which will make for more rich characters and stronger relationships since we all share common bonds.

Nice work to everyone with the non-verbal discussions that we are having. Non-verbal discussions are going to be key in Melo's future, so I'm really happy that we have established this as children already.

    Game specific comments:

    1. We are locked in the cellar now. I don't think that Melo or Del-yin feel guilty. In fact we both seemed rather upset with our mom for wasting precious time. I hope that scroll that we ruined had some significance, or that it was only partially burned, which would draw our fathers attention to it, and the part that wasn't burned will shed some light on the current situation with the Oni.

    2. Concerning the sword. Have we ever seen a sword before? Are they rare or common? Do they exist in the great lore of our people, and that's how we were able to recognize it for what it was?

I am also glad that Del-yin was the one to find the sword, and that I was not able to take it away from him.

    3. Since we are trapped in the cellar, I think that Melo and Del-yin should have a little time to discuss why Melo brought them down there, and what their father explained to Melo the night before. I think that the boys need to confront the issue of succession before their father returns to chew them out; or before we figure out a way to escape!

    4. Which leads me to my last thought. Should we attempt to escape? Like I already said, I don't think that either boys feel as though they have done anything wrong. We were trying to defend our town, and help our father. That hasn't changed, even though our mother yelled at us (what does she know of the responsibilities of protecting the village!?!?). Perhaps we should begin planning our escape.

  2. Well done on the summary. Having that explanation, especially seeing everything spelled out, is really helping me get a better picture of what happened during that village meeting.

If you have a name for the game, or for the session put it in after "01 Session -"

Janz, take a look at my previous comments, there are some questions and requests for you (items 1-4).

Everyone one else, jump in. There's lots to discuss.

  3. I have some questions/thoughts (numbering continued from Adam's):

    5. Refresh my memory. Was our father a warrior in his younger years?

    6. Why would mom lock us down there? Are we supposed to be down there? If not, why not get us out of there and then send us to our "room"?

    7. Regardless of #6, we gotta get the hell out of there. I say we use the sword to chop our way out of there...somehow...

    8. Magic. Did we ever establish that it exists in this world, or is that something for Janz to know and us to figure out?

  4. Answer Bauer's questions:

    5. No, I don't think that our father really is that much of a warrior. We imagine him to be one, and he plays along with it I suspect. It doesn't really matter if he is or isn't. We think he is, and we strive to be a great warrior like our dad, that's all that matters.

    6. Mom locked us in the cellar because she caught us down there. She sealed us as evidence, plus if she let us out, we would probably run away even easier. We seem like troublesome kids, so she probably has learned that locking us in our room isn't going to hold us. Also, we might not even have a room, it could be just living space and sleeping space, plus iI doubt there are locks on the doors.

    7. Chopping our way out seems dangerous and really destructive. Plus it would make a hell of a lot of noise. We need to be more quiet. Perhaps use the sword as a pry bar to lift the weight on the cellar door.

    8. Magic is really to all children. That's as much as we need to know.

**Still waiting for responses to my questions... anyone?**

  5. Session 1 Questions:
    1. We'll work this out in game.
    2. You have never seen a sword before, and yes you have only heard of them in the stories that you have heard from your father growing up.
    3. We'll start with discussion in the cellar.
    4. ...
    5. Your father may have mentioned being in some kind of fight(s) or battle(s)but they were never a big part of his stories.
    8. I would like there to be some kind of magic in the world. I'm still trying to work out how to do it, but if we end up having magic it probably wont be for a couple sessions more. It won't be magic like we think of D&D magic.

Sorry to post so close to game night, I hope you have a chance to read over this before we begin.

  6. I am reading this is time, I hope everyone else is too.

We are not familiar with swords, and we have never dealt with one before. This gives me a great idea!

I look forward to the cellar discussion that will lead off the session.

  7. Ok, never seen a sword before, got it.

I'll be sure to work in the ascension into the conversation as well. See you guys tonight!
