Blood Ties - Session 8

Esme went to meet with Phil and do some digging on Lucy and Francisco, while Violet and Daniela when to the Archdiocese offices to meet with the local church.  The diocese brought in their Director of the Department of Communications and Public Relations, Colleen Dolan to mediate the meeting and keep the record clear of anything that might further damage the church.  Father Soto seemed reluctant to explain what he knew at first but eventually Bishop Alberto Rojas and him decided against Colleen Dolan’s advice and told the truth.

Father Soto said that Lucy came to her terrified of her angel who attacked her and referred to himself Legion.  Father Soto explained that he had been hiding Lucy for the past 6 days to keep her safe in a location that only he knows of.  When pressed to reveal Lucy’s location, Father Soto wouldn’t give Lucy up, not even under the threat of arrest.  When Violet showed Father Soto the email she received from Lucy pleading for help, Father Soto revealed that the message could not have been from Lucy because Lucy had lost her phone and was in hiding when the message was sent.  While it was disappointing to Daniela that Lucy could not be reached, it was comforting to Violet to know that she was being kept safe.

After the meeting Violet and Daniela spoke with Esme and Phil on speaker phone and learned a good deal about Francisco:
  • Frankie was transferred to Draper Penitentiary because of its Psychiatric ward
  • He was diagnosed as delusional, multiple-personality disorder
  • He was reportedly very religious, and never violent
  • Two of his cellmates committed suicide, which seemed to add to his mental state
  • He served 4 of his 10 years in Draper and was released in May

Phil also made some connections between the victims of the recent Familia murders.  Cesar Torres was the leader of Familia at the time of the Mercado Sawyer fire.  According to testimony from the trial, Torres ordered 3 Familia to harass Violet’s father and intimidate him so that he would stop his pro-community campaign.  Josué, Ramon Perez, and Fransciso were all named at the trial; however Francisco was the only one of the three that was convicted.

Violet called to check in with Benny and see if Rudy had come back yet.  Benny answered his phone and told her that Rudy was back and that they should come to Brothers Pawn.  Violet detected something in his voice, something else was going on.  Esme and Phil weren’t finished with their investigation, so Violet and Daniela borrowed her car to drive back to the barrio and check in on Benny.

Just at the two woman walked in the front door of Brothers Pawn Violet’s phone began to vibrate.  Rudy was calling, but before she could speak with him the door closed behind the both of them and Josué stepped out of the back room with a gun in his hand.  Violet was able to keep Rudy on the line without Josué knowing, but they were trapped in the transaction cage.  Josué stepped up to Benny, who was bound and gagged behind the counter and stuck him with the butt of his handgun, drawing blood.

Josué began to explain that he had been working with Legion to find Lucy, but instead he found Violet snooping around at the warehouse the evening before.  Before Josué could explain anything else Legion’s voice spoke from inside the pawn shop.  Josué was visibly shaken by Legion’s appearance.  He begged for Legion to let him go.  Instead Legion yelled “Silence” and burst all but one of the light strips in the shop.  Legion seemed pleased that he had both Violet and Josué in the same place at the same time.  He explained that there was a lot of unsettled history amongst them.

Legion commanded Josué to help him reenact the events of the night of the fire.  Violet pleaded with Legion to stop, and Legion responded by whispering in her ear that “she had no idea what she had done” 10 years ago when she took the stand as a witness in the trial.  Legion ordered Josué to produce a lighter.  Josué refused at first but Legion was too much of a threat to resist.  Josué removed the lighter and flicked it, holding it with a trembling hand in front of his face.

Legion explained that Benny would play the role of Violet’s father since he was already bound and gagged.  Josué and Violet would play themselves, and Legion said that he would play Frankie. As he explained his role, Frankie stepped out of the back hall and under the one remaining pool of light.  Josué immediately put 3 bullets through Frankie’s chest.  Frankie dissolved into dust and collapsed to the floor.

Legion’s resolve was unphased, he commanded Josué to speak the words he said the night of the fire.  Josué threatened Benny as he had Violet’s father that night.  Just as he finished his threat Frankie stepped out of the shadows and extended his arms as if to stop Josué.  He was too slow.  Josué knew what was coming next and threw the lighter as if it were a live grenade.  The lighter exploded inches from his hand in the form of a supernatural fireball.  Josué was thrown back by the explosion and hit a wall.  The fire spread in an instant all over the area around Benny.  Benny struggled in his bindings to get away from the inferno that instantly surrounded him.  As he struggled he upset the chair he was tied to and fell to the burning ground behind the counter.

Daniela picked up Lucy’s rosary as the flames spread, both women have a choice to make, run for their lives or run to Benny’s rescue and certain peril.

  1. Hey guys. I'm still working on getting through Episode 70 and your audio file, Adam. I did want to post a few last-minute thoughts of mine, though. One: my character is for sure going to try to save poor Benny, and she might even be starting to lose it a little here, because it's bringing back long-suppressed memories of the other fire at Sawyer Mercado. After we save/fail to save him (assuming we get out alive!), I think Violet is going to have to finally break down and call her parents, to see what kind of info they have. That will be a tough conversation, as her family obviously does not want Violet to be back in Chicago.

Also, when we took the dust to be analyzed at Loyola, we saved some out for ourselves, right? Because I was thinking it would be cool to take some to the local botanica to see if the proprietor (hopefully a creepy, older lady or gentleman who sells both fake and actual potions) knows what it is or has known of anyone using it before. Legion is both a religious type of figure and a murderer, so some sort of hybrid magic could be going on here.

We will also, at some point, have to reach out to Rudy again. Finding out why he's called Brown is still on my to-do list. :)

    1. I think we have totally nailed your "Guilt" aspect this game. Your phone call to your parents is going to be rough, I'm excited for it!

I'm glad you want to hit the Botanica too, I think we can certainly use it as a way to give you some ammo against Legion. Yes, you have some dust in a baggy.

  2. This is going to be very disorganized mix of ideas, due to my usual issue - lack of time, but I guess better this then nothing, right?

    1) Daniela is recognizing similarities between her mother's mental / spiritual condition and Frankie’s disorder combined with Legion’s presence. Her belief is that Frankie is the one who stands behind all this mess. I see opportunity to use the research and religious tradition’s skills as well as use dr. Mason to help me with this. Him and Daniela are going to see each other anyway when the lab results are ready. He could help her researching conventional and nonconventional religious remedies or even finding an exorcist to help get rid of Legion.

    2) I definitely want Daniela to meet with Phil again and find out what it is he’s discovered, and also to ask him to help me find Lucy by following/spying on Father Soto.

    3) Shevon, what do you think about the idea that your parents have stayed in touch with Frankie thru all those years out of guilt and now they are helping him get back at the bad guys. After all they have the same enemy. Your parents really knew what happened that night and that Frankie was not guilty. I just don’t know how would Lucy fit into this picture.

This is all I have for now. I have listened to the podcast twice but both times was at work so I think I will do it one more time with a full attention. I have listened to your recording, Adam. These are awesome, they explain a lot and make the game easier for us.

Ending question: If I understood correctly from your recording ("suspicions are action"), we are suppose to tell GM about our suspicions and none of our ideas for the game plot are suppose to remain hidden. Is this correct?

Sorry if this is doesn’t make much sense to you guys. See you tomorrow at Adam’s! :)

p.s. That's right, we want more fate points!

    1. In response to your items:

      1. I like the idea of using your research and religious traditions to get some ammo for defeating Legion. One last discussion with Dr. Mason will also be good now that you realize that Legion is both supernatural and religious. I really like the idea of an exorcism of some sort. I don't think we are going to have the time to develop or bring in an exorcist this late in the game. Perhaps you could "develop the skill" when/after you talk with Dr. Mason. I plan on giving you both one more skill point after today's session. I think its possible for you to defeat Legion with psychology and some low level exorcism. Remember the Bible passage and how Jesus dealt with Legion (Dr. Mason can help more with this too).

      2. Phil finds Lucy - good thinking, make it happen.

      3. Interesting idea but it would be difficult to work that into the plot at this point. Violet's parents are hiding from this whole thing, it would undo their plan to have kept in contact with Frankie. Also, they are going to be pissed off with Violet when they get the phone call she is in Chicago... Violet is the fearless one, not her parents!

Ending Question: Yes you should immediately make your suspicions known to the GM and to the other players too. Secrets are fun, but they don't work when you keep them to yourself. Even if you tell the GM and the other players of your suspicion or intentions, that doesn't mean PC's (player characters) and NPC's (non-player characters) know about what you have revealed. We all still play our characters oblivious, but now everyone knows what your goal or intent is, and if anyone (PC's too) can help you get what you want they will.

*Example: we all know that Violet is going to call her parents. Shevon told us. I can plan for it, rather than being surprised when she whips out her phone mid-session and declares that she is calling home. Also, just because you know she is going to do it doesn't mean your character knows what she is planning.. You aren't going to stop her, but when she goes to make the call, you can tell her "whatever happens, I'm here for you" because you, as a player, had been thinking about that scene and how you can help her character out. We all are thinking about how that scene is going to play out now. That scene is going to be awesome now because we all know what is at stake, and we have had time to prepare for it and make it cool.

      MORE FATE POINTS!!!
