Blood Ties - Session 09

Violet and Daniela rushed into Brother’s Pawn to rescue Benny without hesitation.  The fire grew with supernatural fury as they made their way into the shop.  The flames were already burning Benny as Violet rushed to pull him to safety.  Daniela fought her way through the flames to pull a fire extinguisher off the wall.  The two worked together and cut the bindings that tied Benny to his chair.  Benny snapped to, but he was clearly concussed.  The three made a break for the door as soon as they could.

As they fought back the flames, and made their way back to the door, Josué reappeared with his gun in hand.  The three rushed for the door and just barely slipped out under a hail of gun fire, leaving Josué behind in growing inferno.

Rudy called as they hit they crossed the street; he was alive and heading in their direction.  The three lost no time jumping into Esme’s car.  Traffic was heavy as Violet waited for an opportunity to pull a U-turn.  Josué escaped the building and put a bullet through the rear driver’s side window almost killing Benny in the backseat.  Violet couldn’t wait any longer.  She pulled out into traffic and got rear-ended, they were facing the right direction, and they were headed away from Josué.

A block down the street a pedestrian stepped off the curb right out into the path of Esme’s speeding car.  Violet tried to swerve to miss the pedestrian and slammed the front end of the car into a parked car in the opposite side of the street.  As the car swerved Daniela saw the pedestrian get clipped by the front bumper and then dissolve into dust.  Josué kept on their trail and was still throwing bullets in their direction.  Violet pushed Esme’s car to move one again.  The car rattled and lurched for another block until they reached Rudy.  The car died for good just as Rudy hopped into the backseat with his brother.

Benny jumped out of the car and took off towards Humboldt Park and Norwegian American Hospital.  Rudy ran after him.  Violet called Rudy to meet her and Daniela on Sawyer Street at the train tracks as soon as he could grab Benny.

Violet lead Daniela down Sawyer towards an abandoned switch-track station she knew of.  The station was located a berm that would give them visual control over any potential assailants.  Daniela trailed behind slightly enough that Violet couldn’t see Frankie materialize in the middle of the street.  Daniela came to a jarring halt.  Frankie caught her and held her head in his hands and whispered a warning to her about Legion.  He told her that Legion would kill her if she got in the middle of his plans for Violet.  Daniela replied asking Frankie “Do you need help?”  Her words echoed with supernatural permanence in the vacant street as if Frankie was pleading for her help.

Daniela caught up to Violet and the two of them jumped the fence and climbed up the berm to the switch-track station.  Daniela explained her encounter with Frankie back in the street. The two began to discuss the possibility that Frankie may be trapped or controlled by Legion.  Before they could make any further sense of the situation Legion cut in spoke to Violet.  Legion told Violet that he was going to kill her, but first he needed her to understand why he wanted to kill her.  Legion tried to explain the events of the fire from 10 years ago.  Legion claimed that Frankie was trying to stop Josué, and that the fire was an accident.  Legion struggled to explain how Frankie accidentally made the fire worse, instead of snuffing it.  As Legion spoke he referred to his time spent in solitary confinement as if he was with Frankie in prison, or perhaps that he was Frankie.

Before Legion could make Violet understand, and ultimately kill her, he left because, as he said, “Somebody is approaching.”  Josué stepped out of the shadows back down by the fence. He wearily climbed the fence.  Violet took her handgun out of her purse and trained it on Josué as he hit the ground on her side of the fence.  She fired a single shot at Josué and grazed him.  The two argued over Josué’s intentions.  Josué said that Legion had told him that if he killed her he would live.  Violet called Legion’s bluff and convinced Josué that it was pointless for him to kill her, Legion planned on killing them both regardless.

Josué lowered his gun, and turned to climb back over the fence.  His last words to Violet were, “I hope you can live with yourself knowing that you are responsible for both of our deaths tonight.”  Just after he spoke, two gun shots rang out, and Josué fell to the ground dead.  A shadowed figure lit a cigarette and stepped out of their hiding place and said, “No Josué, you’re the only one who is going to die tonight.”  It was Rudy.

  1. Your extra credit assignment for this two week break is to listen to another podcast. I put a link to 2 GM's 1 Mic in the links at the bottom of the blog. Listen to "Episode 2-7": Conflict Resolution. The link is in the body of the most recent post on their blog. It labeled as "2-7" (because its season 2, episode 7).

Only listen to the first 30 minutes. After that review other games and do other stuff. The first 30 minutes is pure gold.

The end of our game is going to come down to a mixture of physical and verbal combat. This podcast is a super concise crash course on how cool verbal combat can be. Post your thoughts!

  2. Next session is June 1st @ 7:30pm. We are playing at Bozena's. That's 4 days away. For this next session I want you guys to set your trap for Legion/Frankie. I want to end the session with the suspense of: "Is the trap/plan going to work?" It gives interest and purpose for the upcoming session, plus to will put you in a position to be able to plan for the last session in terms of: "What happens if the trap/plan doesn't work?"

You still need to do all the "mini-scene" things you guys are planning, but remember, we are working towards setting the trap and implementing a plan. We are framing the final scene at the end of this upcoming session.

  3. I was thinking of using all my aspects (and some skills) to their full and try to do the "session" with Frankie to help him and get the Legion out of him. I am not sure yet if I want to be the target and invite the Evil to switch the host s between Frankie and myself. Considering all of my aspects - it would make sense for me to act out of compassion for Frankie (being additionally driven by my family history) and indulge completely into a reckless fight with Legion by using Love and Light under the protective wing of my Guardian Angel.

My plan would of course involve seeing dr. Mason and ask him to help me perform an act of so called exorcism or maybe even try to get father Soto involved as an additional protective shield. But yeah, I think it would be pretty exciting for the nun to go crazy thinking that she can dissolve evil with her faith and love and save Frankie's soul.

I still need to work on details but first I wanted to run the main idea through you, guys. Does this make sense? Any suggestions / ideas?

  4. Cool! Crazy, reckless nuns, I love it!

I would still like Violet to place a call to her parents - maybe early on in the scene, to set up her emotional conflicts/ involvement. Then from there, we'd talked about maybe doing a split scene, where Daniela goes on her errand and Violet goes on hers. If you still want to do that, I was thinking I'd like to take a trip to an old neighborhood standby, the botanica (brujeria) to talk to the creepy old proprietor. I'd be looking for a weird old vessel or some such thing, to cast Legion's spirit into. I'm thinking Violet will be against the idea of having Daniela become possessed, so she'd be looking into some witchcraft type thing as an alternative. Maybe Daniela dismisses that as magic, so there could be an interesting conflict there. Violet will also bring a sample of the dust to the botanica, to see if the old dude has ever seen anything like it before. He might be able to shed some light.

As for setting a trap, I think we'd said we wanted the final showdown to be in the church, right? So maybe we could go to Lucy's apartment, where we know it'd be easy for him to find us - use ourselves, or one of us, as bait. Then we'd have to race across Palmer Square in the dark, hoping to reach the church before Legion catches us. At the church, we could have Dr. Mason and Fr. Soto waiting and ready to perform the exorcism. Or at least, that would be the idea. We might reach the church and find one of them dead already.... mwa, ha, ha.

  5. This is good that we are tossing ideas around like and we still have some time left go back and forth with things. Here are my thoughts about what you guys are proposing:

I love the idea of an exorcism gone wrong! I definitely think that it would be cool to put Legion inside Daniela - that would be one hell of an action sequence! Violet would obviously be against the idea… so here is how we tie the two things together.

I think the both of you need to go to the brujeria, and I think Daniela will be looking for something to help pull Legion out of Frankie and Violet will be looking for something to contain Legion (a “weird old vessel”, as Shevon suggested) once he has been exorcised. I think that Legion jumping to Daniela will be in the back of Daniela’s mind, but probably wouldn’t be” Plan A.” We can all expect it to happen, but Daniela doesn’t necessarily need to be actively seeking it (unless you really think it works with her character, in which case go for it).

I also have an idea for the shopkeeper, it involves you both being in the store, and it also involves the store keeper not being a creepy old man. With you permission Shevon I would like to have the surprise you with the shop keeper ( I don’t want to spoil your scene by taking away the old guy, but I think I can do something really fun if you let me).

The split scene will consist of Daniela having lunch with Dr. Mason, and Violet calling her parents (probably her dad). We can then send both characters to the brujeria once they are both resolved to enter into this final battle.

The trap starting at Lucy’s apartment and ending in the church sounds great. In fact I have very good reason to put you both in the church at the end of this game anyhow, so it makes sense that the whole thing gravitates there. Since we know that the trap is going to start at Lucy’s, but not end there, we know that the trap isn’t going to work perfectly. Something is going to go wrong, or something is going to get complicated and Frankie/Legion is going to run – pulling you both, and the final action scene to the church. Knowing that that is going to happen, think about the conflict at Lucy’s apartment. What do you want to attempt there? Maybe you attempt the exorcism there first and find that it doesn’t work because the “weird old vessel” as Shevon put it can’t bind and hold Legion. That’s when Daniela could reveal to Violet that she will become the” vessel?”

I will arrange the complication, I want you to set the scene at Lucy’s and tell me how you plan to attack Legion. Our session will probably end as Legion appears at Lucy’s, but maybe it will go as far the first exorcism. I feel like we want to save the scary shit for the last session, I will see how things go on Friday.

Last thing, Daniela mentioned Father Soto and Dr. Mason maybe helping with the exorcism. Think about that a bit more. Both characters will be hard to convince to cooperate, what you are proposing is some rough stuff (which is awesome). Father Soto will be involved in some way at the end of the game, I question whether he volunteers. I have a great way for him to get dragged into things, but I’m open to suggestion. Remember, don’t count on Rudy, I have plans to keep him out of the spotlight for the end (I don’t want him to save you both anymore - I want you to be the action heroes now). How does Esme fit into all of this, and if she doesn’t, why not? How does Phil fit into all this, and if he doesn’t, why not?

Last thing, make sure you listen to that 2 GMs 1 Mic podcast before the last session; you don’t have to listen to it before this session if you can’t get to it.

    1. I just had a great idea. Violet can use her Neighborhood Knowledge to remember the botanica in the barrio. Shevon, you can make up the old man who ran the store in your youth. Like most things in the barrio, the store has changed. The store is still there but now its more of a brujeria instead of a botanica, and the old man no longer runs the shop, someone else does. You can use your knowledge of the past to win the trust of the new owner and get some assistance. How's that?
