Blood Ties - Session 10

Esme and Phill pulled up in a news van pulled up just after Rudy shot and killed Josué.  Esme quickly discovered that Rudy had been shot, but not by Josué, he had been shot the night before in the parking lot outside the warehouse.  Rudy had killed one of Familia then, and now he had killed its leader.  Rudy was passed out for roughly 12 hours before coming to.  Esme learned that her car was totaled.  She took it well enough due to the extenuating situation at hand.  Phil dropped Esme, Benny, and Rudy off at the hospital where they all spend the night, and dropped Violet and Daniela off at Daniela’s apartment.

In the late morning Daniela went to meet with Dr. Mason for brunch.  She learned that the dust collected from Lucy’s was not supernatural in anyway.  She spoke with Dr. Mason about Legion and the possibility of attempting an exorcism.  Dr. Mason offered to help her with anything short of participating in the exorcism.  He left Daniela with words of caution and a verse from Ephesians – The Armor of God.

Meanwhile Violet called her parents’ house to speak with her father about the night of the arson.  She did her best to keep the true purpose of her call from her father, but in the end she was forced to reveal that she was in Chicago and that she was embroiled in a conflict with Francisco.  Her father confirmed the majority of the events of the arson, and eventually recalled that he remembered Francisco attempting to stop Josué from harming him.  Her father was thrown back by a blast that obscured his memory of the evening after the fire began.  Violet struggled to end the conversation, eventually she was forced to hang up on her father as he pleaded with her to come home.

When Violet and Daniela got back together they began to hatch their plan to trap Legion/Frankie.  However they needed some supernatural advice, and also a vessel into which they could cast Legion after they exorcised him from Frankie.  Violet knew of a botanica in the barrio, so she and Daniela set off to visit it.

The botanica didn’t look very different but it had changed owners since Violet was last there.  A young skinhead punk with a roiling tattoo that climbed up his neck was the proprietor now and he tried to shoo them away immediately.  Violet soothed his frustration by speaking Spanish with him and telling him that she used to know Old Man Montoya, the previous owner.  The skinhead began to take the two women seriously once Daniela recognized that the punk had use the word Thaumaturgy (miracle-worker, magician) to describe Frankie’s abilities.

The women eventually purchased totem from the skinhead.  The totem was a frightening carving, about a foot tall, of a man in the fetal position.  The skinhead himself was leery of the object, and told the two women that he didn’t ever want to see it again.  Violet and Daniela left the botanica to make the final preparations to set a trap for Legion/Frankie.

  1. Summary is up.

Shevon, at the end of last session you started to develop an idea to use a sibling of Frankie’s to lure him to Lucy’s apartment. I’m concerned that we won’t have enough time to invent the sibling, find him, and hold him hostage quick enough for the last session. Can you think of a way to use yourself as bait instead? I don’t mean to shut your idea down, if we had more time I would have rolled with it, but I want to make sure we nail the end. I also feel like you being the bait will raise the tension for your character more so than having another person as the bait. Put yourself in danger and you will be rewarded with more satisfying action as the scene plays out.

Remember; act foolishly sometimes (when it makes sense obviously). A great example is when Daniela went into the warehouse after Legion tore it apart. That was tense, that was foolish, that was awesome!

    1. I just got an idea for us to attract Frankie. While reading about exorcisms, I found out that you can effect possessed person/demon and make him/her go nuts like during an exorcism just by praying for him/her in his absence. What if Daniela called Legion into where they are through prayers? I don;t think we need to put a lot of efforts into finding Legion; He wants to find us so let's help him out. Let's pray... What do you think? Is this going to work?

    2. I think you can attract Legion by praying, but I still think that you won't get Frankie to physically step into Lucy's apartment until Violet offers herself up as bait.

I feel like Legion is Daniela's opponent, and Frankie is Violets. I don't want Daniela to steal the fight entirely. That said, you guys can work together. If prayer can drive demons crazy then that will keep Legion distracted so that Violet can deal with Frankie in the flesh. Perhaps you can put Legion into remission for a minute so that Violet can hold Frankie down, and Daniela can get her hands on him to perform the exorcism.

This is going to get messy, Legion and Frankie are going to fight like hell to stop you two.

  2. Bozena, I hope you have some idea of what it takes to perform an exorcism for tomorrow. I honestly don't have much knowledge of what it involves. All I know is that you usually have to touch the afflicted and that it takes great faith and struggle to be successful. The exorcism will be treated as combat, Legion is going to fight you to stay rooted. Be prepared for battle.

    1. I have some idea…. but I will have more tomorrow morning/noon. For now I just know that the exorcism I will perform cannot be the formal exorcism, because Daniela doesn’t have what it takes. She is neither a Bishop nor Jesus Christ. What she can do is to perform something, which is called "PRAYER OF DELIVERANCE", a non-formal exorcism during which she should not address Legion directly; All she is allowed to do is to ask God/Jesus/Saints to make an evil spirit leave Frankie’s body. Main idea here is to use Daniela's aspect and ask her GUARDIAN ANGEL for help. We all know Daniela thinks she is well protected under His wing. Of course things may and will go wrong. I am working on some ideas for that...

Also, I would like Daniela to have a BIBLE and our ROSARY with her, as an additional protection, and to balance the energy of the creepy TOTEM.

I am also thinking about trying to TIE DOWN FRANKIE (which often is practiced during an exorcism for the protection of all persons involved). I don't know yet how we would do this.

Catholic Church recommends that after an exorcism, restored to sanity person must CEASE EVIL ACTIONS or whatever practices may have caused the possession (like occultism, meditation, yoga ☺ etc.) Question for you, Adam: Do we know what was the main reason for Frankie’s possession? It would have to be something that he has done or used to do, not his mental illness, nor the unfortunate events during his life.

    2. Perhaps the Prayer of Deliverance is your first mistake... You said that you shouldn't be able to perform a true exorcism because you are not a Bishop or Christ, but this is our game... I say you can do (eventually). At first you might not think its possible due to Catholic tradition, so maybe you try the Prayer of Deliverance first. We know it won't work entirely and that it's going to piss Legion off and force you all to go to St. Teresa for the final showdown, but we can use it as learning tool to help Daniela realize that she needs to have more faith in God. Daniela cannot perform the exorcism, but God can work through her to do it!

Regarding how or why Frankie became possessed at first: No you do not know how, when, or why he was possessed. Frankie's ability to manipulate air movement per-dates the night of the arson though. Frankie caused the fire at Mercado Sawyer (seemingly on accident). His time spent in prison certainly bred evil and thoughts of revenge. I have theories of why Frankie is the way he is, and we can discuss them afterwards, but I would prefer to leave it a mystery until the game is over (perhaps I like your theory better than mine).

    3. You're right. This would actually make it easier for me to have Daniela try to perform the Formal Exorcism. Maybe she could begin the Prayer of Deliverance and soon switch to a direct combat. This would make her feel like she is more in control. This would also teach her a lesson of faith as she will finally have to surrender and let God do the job. Is this what you are suggesting? (Sometimes I need to make sure if my comprehension is correct. ;)

      Frankie - sounds good.

    4. Yes, save the Formal Exorcism for the church, it will have more impact. Also, there is tons of holy water at the church (remember to save some ashes).

"Let God do the job": Yes.

  3. 1. As believed by Catholic Church, THE POSSESSED PERSON RETAINS HIS/HER FREE WILL. I would like Daniela to try and talk some sence into Frankie before Legion takes over him and before the actual exorcism begins (if this is possible). If not, Daniela will probably try to address Frankie directly during the exorcism which may result in huge failure or great success.

    2. HOLY WATER + SALT + ASHES COMBO = It's one of the options for an exorcism from The Roman Ritual (Chapter XII "The Exorcism", which I added to the links below). We do have ashes, salt is no brainer, holy water we can get from the church.

    1. Take cues from this document, but don't feel like you are tied to the ritual that the Catholic Church prescribes. There is some good stuff in there but this is our fiction, make sure you tell the story you want to tell.

  5. So to sum it up after I actually slowed down to read and think: Daniela is not dealing with Frankie at all. She leaves it to Violet and pays full attention to Legion. This makes sense since performing an exorcism is a lot to handle. Also from what I understood, we have this dualistic oppositions, on the spiritual level: Daniela nad Legion, on physical: Violet and Frankie. You wrote: "Daniela cannot perform the exorcism, but God can work through her to do it." Do you mean it in a way that Daniela must let herself become a portal for God's actions just like Frankie became one for the Legion? In this case, it is not the fight between Daniela and Legion, but between God and Evil. All she can do is just to stand still and rooted in her faith. Easy! ;))
